HRH The Prince of Wales to Mrs Freda Dudley Ward.

I wish I had some news as my letters are so so deadly nowadays and I’m so sorry sweetheart, but guess one doesn’t hear much at the Australian Corps [where] the only form of amusement is to get “boxed” . needless to say I look on darling, tho I laugh a lot!! One has to enter into their life and amusements as much as one can when one is living with them, tho I fear getting “boxed” as it always makes me feel so ill!! However I’m nearing the end of this fearful existence . I’m quite looking forward to a week on the Rhine in about a fortnight, tho of course I’ll give you my plans in detail when they are fixed. I think and hope 1st week in Feb should see me back to England and Toi sweetheart if you’ll have Moi who dreams and thinks of nothing and no one else; your E’s love and adoration of Toi “passeth all understanding” and that’s more than the truth!!

Good night and “ dors bien ” my very own darling belovèd little girl. Penses quelquefois à ton petit E qui t’embrasse de tout son Coeur et qui t’appartient de plus en plus entièrement. 1

Bless you my sweetheart Thine E’

Mrs Dudley Ward, who did not divorce her husband until 1932, remained the great love of the Prince of Wales’ life until he finally broke with her two years later. By that time, 1934, Mrs Simpson had appeared on the scene.
